Expansion of Death Valley and JT NP's

Postby CandaceS » Sun Mar 24, 2019 9:24 pm

What with the Death Valley and JT expansions going ahead, I'd imagine a few more peaks will be added to their respective peak lists here on LOJ. :-D

Is John (or anyone else) already working on this? I haven't looked at JT, but it appears there are a few summits in the Quail Mountains that are now in the far south end of DVNP. Maybe some others beyond that too, for example in the far north Avawatz Mountains? I'm looking at the full-screen map on LOJ so I'm not sure where the new boundary is.

I've definitely got some work to do with this and the huge wilderness additions in the Public Lands Package. It looks like *some* wilderness boundaries are finally updated on Wilderness.net, so new wilderness will be reflected here soon. The NPS expansions will take some other research to find the updated lat/lon boundaries. Let me know if anyone has a good source for this.

Well, I was able to get a pretty good map for the NP expansions googling the original names of the proposed areas. The Joshua Tree stuff is many many little parcels of private land that was bought up so I did my best to approximate the locations. That only added 3 peaks (2 ranked). The DV list gained 6 or 7.

So far only 4 wildernesses of CA have updated boundaries though all of the New Mexico ones are up (in other words no OR, no UT, and several missing CA wildernesses).

Did any CO wilderness boundaries change, or were any new wilderness areas declared?

Thanks for the updates, John!

If it's not too much trouble, can you list here the names of the new DVNP peaks? 8)
