Just stumbled across this thread - very interesting discussion. I'm working right now on my own personal formula for rating of mountains based on various variables such as isolation, elevation, prominence, and YDS. I think steepness adds a whole other dimension that I may have been missing in my mind. Good discussion so far!

I'm wondering, do you have a combined top ranked list for all of the states' peaks by these various measures?

At a glance, it looks like South Hozomeen is first and Grand Teton is second by the overall average angle measure although I'm far from sure that I didn't miss anything.Though there may be some summits in CA or elsewhere that could best this. I would also expect Mount Hood to do very well by these measures. It's not as as large in diameter at the base nor does it necessarily have the overall rise from its base over several miles of most of the other Cascade volcanoes, but it is probably as consistently steep within a mile or so radius of the summit as most of the top peaks for these sorts of measures. Ditto that for Jefferson and maybe for Thielsen and McLaughlin.

Eric - Good you noticed the "combined average" lists for the individual states. Just put that in last week. Odds are S Hozomeen will come out as the steepest overall summit in the lower 48. Number 2 is a relative unknown, Vigil Peak in Glacier NP, a bit of an upset over Grand Teton, which is currently number 3. Once OR/CA/NV are run I'll produce the combined western states lists(probably top 200) for each category. Good guesses on key CA/OR peaks, have to see if the numbers agree.

One thing about WA is that many of the peaks near the BC border weren't analyzed, as I haven't been able to make use of Canadian DEMs yet. Some summits which might score well in the various categories(American Border Peak, for example) are not included. These error peaks listed at the bottom with a -99 angle value.

Ran CA while stuck working on stuff today, lot easier than coming up with the 15K+ peak list itself:

Apart from rerunning bad data/unevaluated peaks and fixing other errors, this project is now completed, and I give it the Mr T seal of approval. If others get some use out of this, even better.

Good work Tim. Some of the results are as expected, such as the dominance of Glacier NP and the North Cascades. I'm a little bit surprised that AZ beats out CA and OR in the combined avg totals down to the top 500. I guess CA goes up as the # of peaks increases but I'm a bit surprised that Oregon did not muster a little bit of a better showing and at least beat out UT and ID.

Maybe you should put the top 100 combined avg list on summitpost. It's an impressive collection of mtns with some tough climbs. And the aesthetics of the peaks is generally fantastic.

The top 100 combined list is an impressive set of peaks, for sure. Good mix of known and obscure. Its neat to see which ones sneak in there along with all those Glacier and North Cascades summits.

Someday I'll probably put the list on summitpost with photos, after running a few key error peaks. American Border Peak is an error summit which might crack the top 100. I may add some commentary/interpretation for a more general audience, eventually.

Ironically, AZ mostly does so well because of a big hole in the ground! It's very interesting to me that I've done several of the CO peaks with a combined average or 29 or greater and maybe several more to come even though I'm not a climber (and don't live there anymore), but I'm not sure if I will get any of the AZ peaks with the same scores, although I need to take a closer look at that list. I guess that's related to the alpine vs. canyon issue. Good stuff in any case.
