12340 vs. 12338 - Palomino Mtn quad

Postby kirkmallory » Mon Sep 14, 2009 10:32 pm

On the Palomino Mountain quad, just northeast of Sugarloaf Mountain, are two points where one is ranked. This is listed as 12,340 on LOJ which is an interpolated value, but I noticed Point 12,338 immediately northeast of that, which may or may not be higher. Based on the map alone, it has a 45% chance of being higher. A little too close of a chance of me to pass it up! I climbed both points on Saturday 9/12 after Toner & Sugarloaf. There was no register on 12,340, but there was one on 12,338 placed by Mike Garratt last year on August 12th.

Mike - did you conclude that 12,338 was higher? I couldn't tell.

The 12340 summit is more like 12360.
It is visually higher than the 12338 suggesting it just misses 12360 contour.
The 12338 summit is more interesting and more worthy of a register.

It was my second visit. Came in from the E over Palimino Mtn via Monument lake to do Toner and Sugarloaf the first time.

I always wanted to go back and check out the Pagosa side.
I did the same loop over SugarLoaf and Toner with a finsh on the 11210 S'er.
Nice loop.
