Newly named Spencer Peak near Silverton

Postby kirkmallory » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:15 am

According to http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_10240376, Point 13,087 just southwest of Grand Turk near Silverton has been named Spencer Peak. It's unranked, with a rise of 267 feet above the 12,820-foot saddle with Grand Turk. Many people who have climbed Grand Turk have probably climbed it - Teresa and I went over it on 10/9/04 on our way to Grand Turk.

John - looks like this needs to be added as an unranked thirteener to the list!

That's what I get for being creative and skirting bumps such as this. I was just there a couple weeks ago for an early morning stroll. On a related note, I thought unranked 12734 was a lot more interesting than any other unranked peaks with its studded top.

12734 is called "Turkshead Peak" in Ormes. And apparently, from readhing the thread on Fourtenerworld about the San Juan Mountaineer's book, it's mentioned in there too.

Well, I violate my own principles by adding it, but for the SJM name "West Turkshead Peak" to work, there needs to be a "Turkshead Peak", so I've added a new unranked/unofficially named peak:

angular unconformity, I'll remember that one.

It really doesn't look like a Turkshead knot or any other kind of Turkshead. Any idea how it got the name?

I was having trouble with the peak's naming origins, too. Wikipedia has a suggestion on its page for the Turk's Head Knot:

The knot takes its name from a notional resemblance to a turban though a turban is wound rather than interwoven.

Found this on the Turk's Head knot:

I don't think the peak resembles the knot either, I wonder if its just a simple play on words from the peak being next to Grand Turk?
