Blackwall Summit elevation

Postby kirkmallory » Tue May 22, 2007 6:51 pm

I just noticed that there is a tiny 13,080-foot contour, right by the 'n' in 'mountain', at the summit of Blackwall Mountain on the topo:

Having just climbed it, I'd agree that this is the summit. SarahT just posted a good picture of it on Blackwall's page:

If this is the case, then the summit would interpolate to 13,100. But based on the size of the contour and having been there, it's probably no more than a few feet higher than 13,080. But to be consistent, it should probably be listed at 13,100. Every list I've ever seen shows it as the 13,073-foot point.

Funny when I was there years ago I marked on the map the 13073 point was higher.

Now there are usually some pretty big snow drifts on the top flats in the spring so it may be hard tell what is the high point until later in the summer.

My notes say I did it as a loop over 12968, Blackwall, 12975, 13129 and 13201 on June 14, 1986 from the N Fork of Henson Creek. There was enough snow that I took my skis to speed the crossing of the basins. So there would have been plenty of snow.

Did you check out 12968? It is an interesting scramble.

Went back last month when there was no snow.
The 13073 point beats the 13080 contour by about five feet.
Not even close.

Sorry to stir things up for nothing. When we did this in May, we just went to whatever was the obvious high point. It was well after the climb when I noticed the 13080 contour south of the 13073 point. When looking at my pictures (similar to the one Sarah has posted for this peak's page on LOJ), I just assumed that was it. But maybe we went over it & I didn't realize it. Perhaps I'll go back some day - I still need to climb Unnamed 12,968!
