Alyson Kirk completes Saguache County

Postby John Kirk » Mon Nov 02, 2015 7:39 pm

Alyson became the 5th to complete this 258 peak county (3rd this year) on October 30th. We summited 183 of these together.

Congrats, Alyson! Looks like your biggest county completed so far in terms of peak count...

Way to go Alyson! Is Saguache #2 behind Gunnison in counties with the most P300 peaks? jp

Yeah, I assumed John Paul was only referring to CO. Obviously, CA has counties with even a higher number of P300s...

Good question for John, but I bet half the western states have at least one county with more ranked peaks

Not to hijack Aly's congrats thread but… I should have clarified Colorado sorry Al. Wow I just did a quick check and Colorado isn’t even close to the other western states. You were correct Al =) Gunnison has the most for CO with 314 but it’s only number 50 when you include the other western states. AZ & CA have 11 counties with more than 314, followed by WA with 6, ID & MT with 5, WY with 4, UT with 3 and NM & OR with 2. Incidentally, San Bernardino CA has the most with 1383 followed by Mohave AZ with 982 and Maricopa with 914… Aly you rock!

Don't Forget NV (which has the county with the most):

Haha missed NV. That adds 7 more to the total so Gunnison CO is #57. And I always thought of Gunnison as crazy big. John when y'all move over there you're gonna have a helluva a good time completing some of those counties :-)

Also, Nye NV has 1419 P300 peaks. Wowza!

Congrats Aly! Looks like a nice list!

To join the other conversation, Nye County is also over 18,000 square miles (Gunnison and Saguache are only around 3200). Nye County is bigger than 9 states, including Maryland and is about half the size of Indiana!

Nye County is a doozy. Aside from the enormous peak count -- it contains nearly a third as many ranked peaks as the entire state of CO -- there would be serious access issues for anyone with less pull than, say, an Air Force general. Much of the county is occupied by the Nellis Test Range and the Nevada Test Site (where nuclear weapons were tested and nuclear waste is stored). Part of Area 51 is in the county. Per LOJ, the county's leading peakbagger has completed barely 5% of its peaks.

Nye seems like a strong candidate for the hardest county to finish in the contiguous 48 states. San Juan in Utah and Whatcom in Washington also come to mind though no doubt cases could be made for others with some combination of high peak count, technical difficulty, access restrictions, remoteness and/or tracklessness.
