Ridge summits

Postby CandaceS » Wed Nov 17, 2021 11:53 pm

Since John is busy with Lidar, etc., I thought I'd throw this on the forum to see if I get any input. :geek

I'm trying to figure out the placement of summit pins for the following two "peaks."

Virgin Peak Ridge: https://listsofjohn.com/peak/42433
South Virgin Peak Ridge: https://listsofjohn.com/peak/43876

Virgin Peak Ridge runs generally west-east for several miles. The highest point along that ridge is the Virgin Peak summit.

South Virgin Peak Ridge runs south from Virgin Peak Ridge, starting at Virgin BM.

To me, it seems like Virgin Peak's summit is also the summit of Virgin Peak Ridge. While Virgin BM is the summit of South Virgin Peak Ridge.

But LOJ has Virgin BM as the summit of Virgin Peak Ridge. And a high point well south of Virgin BM as the summit of South Virgin Peak Ridge. (Furthermore, I don't know why that summit pin is on the 2215 meter high point not on the 2218 meter high point south of it).

Can anyone explain the rationale for these LOJ summit pin placements? Or is this a :worms: ? :-D

I believe John was probably going off the peaks closest to their labels.

Virgin Peak (https://listsofjohn.com/peak/16944) is very close to the Virgin Peak label, hence why John placed it as such.

Virgin Peak Ridge has a western section and an eastern section. The HP of both sections is (https://listsofjohn.com/peak/42433). The western summit is therefore unnamed (https://listsofjohn.com/peak/47630).

Virgin Peak is close to the "Ridge" of Virgin Peak Ridge, so it would make sense that it belongs to that ridge and not the south one. For the South Virgin Peak Ridge HP, John found the highest point along that ridge near the labels. He chose this point (https://listsofjohn.com/peak/43876) as the HP since it is close to the word "South."

Anything NNW of there would make more sense belonging to Virgin Peak Ridge based on proximity to the wording on the map than to South Virgin Peak Ridge.

That's my take, anyhow.

I do see your point that Virgin Peak could possibly be seen as the HP of "Virgin Peak Ridge." Then we'd have to figure out a name for this peak (https://listsofjohn.com/peak/42433). It would still make more sense based on proximity to the wording to be a part of Virgin Peak Ridge than South Virgin Peak Ridge. So it could either be unnamed, or just called the HP of Virgin Peak Ridge that is NOT called Virgin Peak.

OK, thanks for your input.

I'm still inclined to view the entire north-south ridge as "South Virgin Peak Ridge", without focusing on the placement of the label on the map. If Virgin BM is regarded as part of Virgin Peak Ridge, then IMO the 2218 meter high point should be considered the summit of SVPR.

For Alunite Ridge in the Tushars (Utah), the pin was placed on the first closed contour after the first saddle, down the ridge from South Edna Peak.

Another one: Clayton Ridge, Nevada.

LOJ has the summit pin in one place, while Peakbagger.com has it on a different and higher point. That high point is slightly detached from the bulk of the ridge, however it is connected by a saddle.

Yep, I think you nailed it. LoJ has the high point fairly close to the ridge. Both are ranked, so LoJ lists the other one as well. But since it doesn’t quite seem part of the ridge, John lists it as an unnamed summit.

Another one: Crystal Ridge in California's Inyo Mountains: https://listsofjohn.com/peak/212907 :-D

The current LOJ pin is on the 1484' spot elevation. But the printed name extends above that, farther up the ridge.

The coordinates on the BGN page map to a point at around 5800' on the ridge, which is nearly 1000' higher than the LOJ elevation. https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/summary/1667217

I think I'll just avoid ridge high points, unless it's one of those "free-standing" ridges with an obvious summit, lol.

Yep, don't have a good answer for that one.
