Bowknot Spire

Postby DSunwall » Wed Mar 26, 2014 9:05 pm

Does anybody know anything about it? It's in the bowknot of the Green River north of Horseshoe canyon, Blue John, Spur area. This is all I could find with a google search. http://patrickbetts.zenfolio.com/p98400 ... #h37a2b873 anyway, I was going to try get the interesting ranked peak that is right in the middle of the bowknot but it might be a bit difficult solo............ I was hoping not to have to climb the spire itself which I don't think is the high point. Maybe I need a raft.

Hi DSunwall - Cool idea! :wiz: I've floated the Green in a canoe and camped below the Bowknot Bend and I've also hiked down Spring Canyon so getting there is not a real problem. When I hiked down Spring Canyon I saw a 4-Runner along the river. However, to cross the river you will need a boat or two.

I did a little googling and found this trip report of a couple of geocachers climbing the bend. Based on my experience in that area the report sounds legit and it seems like the lead guy scrambled up sans ropes. The only way to really know is go there and see...

Please let me know when you plan on doing this as I may be interested. JP

BTW - The Dolores River has another one of these ranked bowknot bend formations called Muleshoe Bend. There are also a couple on the Colorado close to the confluence with the Green.

The owner of that website regularly posts on backcountrypost.com. He has answered questions I have put out to him.

I also found this photo

which seems to indicate that there is a way up there.

There are some near Goosenecks State Park along the San Juan River, as well

I've looked at this one on the maps a bit a few months back - definitely need a boat unless using some ascenders to get back up the rope used to rappel to begin ascending it (after crossing the river anyway). Looks like some interesting climbing up its east side - low 5th most likely.
