Utah YDS adjustments

Postby Brian Crim » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:06 pm

Hey John.
Just winding down from climbing a few peaks in Utah and had some YDS adjustments for you.

Looking glass rock
Marked as: 5.7
Should be: 5.4

PT 4980 in Arches
Marked as: 2
Should be: 4
Also had a question about the high point. Map marks it on the end but you have the bump. Did you sightlevel it? I didn't have mine on me today. Sure looked close though.

PT 5695 by the needles district entrance
Marked as: 2
Should be: 3

Thanks!

Brian

Which way did you take up 4980? I thought it was class 2, maybe 3 at the most??

Up the crack/gully system. There were 2 spots that were class 4 maybe 5.0. We went up it twice and there wasn't an easier way that I saw. They we're both short, but still 4th. It's like PT 7012 in Boulder County. Although it's only 4 feet of 5th class it's still 5th class.

Edit: Could maybe convince me of class 3.

My wife, who is not a rock climber, has gone up that gully a few times and she definitely does not like those spots. I think that she would use a handline if one was offered.

Looking Glass Rock: I agree w/ Brian. No way is that 5.7. Dom & I thought more like 5.4 when we were up there.

Pt 4980: If that gully is indeed the easiest way (and I think it is) a 4th class rating is probably warranted. Definitely not Class 2! You must have been having a good day Derek ;). I'd say mostly Class 3 with a couple of 4th class moves.

We're talking about the SE gully on 4980, yes? I agree that's 3rd class, and the way I've done it twice, but there's a road and a walkup route from the NW. The 4989 spot elevation on the map is not possible given the contours, so either the spot elevation is erroneous or the contour is missing.

Didn't have it - added:

Also added Dunce Rock:

Noticed quite a few others not listed looking at Desert Rock III, which seems to have enough info for figuring out locations for most of them, but I'm a bit uncertain about Carson's Tower - any help? Looks to me like shadows here match up with photos and the general location:

Haha! I was so convinced it was on here. That's funny.

So many of those towers in the Desert Rock book will be so tricky to peg down. Carson's Tower is here...

Those coords look like the location for "Dock Rock" - is that right?

Sorry about that. I must've put it in wrong. Try this...
Lat: 38.7348
Lon: -109.3339

Also, I checked out Dunce Rock. It's not just 5.8, it has a short aid section that supposedly goes at C1.
