Texas Trip Report -- Picacho Peak BBNP

Thought you guys would like to see a classic desert ascent in Big Bend National Park, TX. It's only 11 minutes long but is 50 megs so if you don't have a high speed connection don't even try it.

John, did you do all of those Latir Peaks in one day?

Here it is.

Haven't been to that area yet, but Kirk Mallory did recently.

I did six of them over two days in November. I started with "Bull Creek Peak" (12,170), "Cabresto Sur Este" (12,456), and Cabresto Peak. Weather looked like it was moving in, so I bailed. Came back the next day and did Venado, out-and-back to Virsylvia, then Latir Peak. It was a very nice area - very little snow at the time, but I'm sure that's changed now!

I love that place. I still need to get Bull Creek Peak, Baldy, and Pinabete. An excuse to get back there. I saw the first bear outside of a road up in that wilderness at about 6:30 a.m. a couple of years back.

Sorry about the link. I've worked up a website and put some of the videos on the page. For Picacho Peak I've added a trip report with a video. I just added a video of Jicarita Peak which has views of quite a few of the high New Mexico peaks including Trouble Benchmark, Santa Barbara Peak, Barbara Peak, Little Jicarita Peak, Chimayosos Peak, East Pecos Baldy, Pecos Baldy, South Truchas Peak, Medio Truchas Peak, Middle Truchas Peak, North Truchas Peak, Pt. 12,900, Sheepshead Peak, Jicarilla Peak, and Trampas Peak in addition to close up views of Jicarita Peak.

:?: I'm puzzled at this:

Picacho Peak is a spectacular yet unnamed peak

Huh?

Looks like a nice climb, though! Tough summits are nice to get. :)

I should have been more specific. It is unnamed on the USGS topo maps. I got the name from a person who is very familiar with Big Bend and its history. He thinks the name came from Ross Maxwell, the first superintendent of Big Bend National Park.
