When does a mountain cease to be a volcano?

I was looking at the volcanoes list and it reminded me of a question I have had:

When does a peak cease to become a volcano? For example, the San Francisco Peaks, Tushar Mountains, and some of the San Juans used to be volcanoes, but usually aren't considered to be volcanoes anymore on most lists I have seen.

Having a crater isn't a requirement either since peaks such as Thielsen, Mount Washington, Three Fingered Jack, or McLaughlin, are still considered volcanoes even though their craters are long gone.
