What to do with old registers?

Postby Andrew Wahr » Mon May 06, 2024 3:24 pm

As I'm placing registers out there, I sometimes happen upon ones that have run their course. Occasionally they can be salvaged (just need more paper or a writing utensil or the like), but sometimes they are broken or damaged in a way that the only real solution is to place a new one. Or perhaps it might be feasible to salvage them except I have a new register but not the materials to salvage the old one (wrong size stuff such that it can't be transferred for example). What's the appropriate thing to do with an old register?

Nothing lasts forever of course, but I don't like the idea of just tossing the old one. Or doing effectively the same thing by just leaving it up there so that it's destroyed by the rain and snow. I'd love it if there were some online repository you could post photos/scans of the old register at but I certainly haven't found such a thing. Nor am I aware of another solution to saving what's on the log when the log is at the end of its life.
