Puma Peak 11,570' 09/05/04

The cold morning was good consolation for such a small undertaking, as snow blew around Kenosha Pass. The photo on the right shows Puma Peak from the Turner Gulch Road. I didn't think that what the Roachs meant by "four-wheel-drive vehicles can go farther" was that you can drive to 11,060' - the gate was open. This is what I did, turning an already short hike into a joke of a walk. The driving is interesting, though I never engaged 4wd. There were some hairpin switchbacks, but there was plenty of room to back up and remaneuver. I arrived at the saddle at 7:00 a.m., putting on a jacket and balaclava for the windy conditions. A short bushwhack led to the tree-covered summit where the distant clouds and trees obscured any view you'd expect from such a prominent peak. The summit register contained in a glass jar had familiar names in it - the last entry was Steve Hunter from June 2003. Not very many visitors to this obscure point. Puma1
