What is prominence?

Sneffels The American Heritage Dictionary defines prominence as "projecting outward". For highpointers' purposes, a mountain's prominence is defined by the summit's rise or height in feet above the highest connecting saddle or ridge to the next higher peak. The next higher peak's prominence is irrelevant and often may not be more prominent. This objective measure of a mountain yields some interesting results. Ryan Schilling has put together the final pieces of Colorado's Top 100 list which will no doubt be an adventure.Blanca Peak
