Elk Mountain - (San Miguel County Highpoint) 10/16/04

A grand fall vacation: highpoints and chile. This semi-drive up made sense to come first as we were driving in the wee hours of the night nearing Las Vegas. Super-8 fit the bill and I hit the road a 5:00 a.m. for the 4x4 route to the top. The drive was punctuated by fog, which seemed to stick to the windshield - not coming off with any amount of wiper application. There was construction on the road to Pecos, hampering the expedition in a minor fashion. The road was very well maintained, and I didn't engage the 4 wheel drive until snow overtook the gentle road. This was just below a switchback after taking the turn south about a mile from the summit. I kept going until it was unfeasible for my wife's Isuzu Trooper. My truck could have made the summit, more or less, but what's the big deal about hiking a mile round-trip (photo on right shows the end of the line for SUV's). picture
picture Fog had overtaken everything between the ranges of 5,000' to 7,000', making the summit appear a little more lofty than normal weather would have it. Santa Fe Baqldy was a siren from here, as well as the Truchas peaks and the peaks in between. Never have I been more serious about wanting to climb more in New Mexico (this fact observed on a sub-one mile walk-up). Santa Fe Baldy would have an adequate hiking distance in store for me tomorrow.
