My Dad and I have tried to keep up a hiking tradition on Thanksgivings/Christmas. With few easier counties left near El Paso, Eddy was the logical choice. The drive was sure to be long and remote. We opted to approach from Dell City to Dog Canyon on the western side of the Guadalupes. It worked out OK, and we were pleased wioth how easy it was to actually drive all the way to the north rim where the hike begins. My father isn't used to bushwhacking, much less in cactii, so it ended up being a bit rough for his taste. We descended down a sloping part of the rim, ending up a bit lower than we needed to be before starting up toward a saddle to the northwest of the highpoint. There was interesting terrain on the ridge, including a few precipitous cliffs and some optional scrambling sections of ridge. Lots of highpointer signatures in the register. We made it back to the vehicle a good bit of time after we expected.
