One Tree Peak - (Chaves County Highpoint) 9/24/05

After Sierra Blanca and Lookout Mountian, I headed sotuh over to Chaves County. Had a really hard time figuring out the location description was referring to as the start of the hike. I might have been due to the fact that the Sunflower Canyon sign was face-down in the brush, which I turned back over: Fallen sign. The rest was trivial after locating the starting point. On the right, the "One Tree" is seen at the mouth of the canyon. This is a fairly good indicator of being on the right track. It was rather hot by now, which was 1:00 pm. I followed the canyon up, at times buswhacking near the beginning of the steepening west slope. picture
pictureI made the mistake of trying to drive west to Paxton on NM 506. I was going for about an hour before I saw the military reservation signs stating to not enter. I had to turn around and head back to Cloudcroft. Don't underesstimate the drive for this county.
