A late start was a nice change, and I decided to try out my 5.10 trail running shoes for the first time. The access Three Sisters Open Space Project affords is a luxury most other peaks in Jefferson County do not possess. I headed across the road up the 2.2 mile trail to Evergreen's summit. I arrived at the top in 42 minutes (photo below).

Elephant Butte was not going to be easy judging by the angle, but also because it is not apparent where to access it from. I found a semi-viable way and arrived at the fun slab beneath the summit featured on the left after about 30 minutes. I made the summit itself fun as well by taking the more vertical approach. The northern sub-summit had a long trunk with a shirt flying from it. Below, the peaks of Clear Creek County form the skyline from Elephant Butte's summit. I made my way down and over to 'The Brother', which I mistook for the peak to the south of it, so I backtracked and went further north to the correct summit. It was nice to bag some easier peaks closer to home for a change, and attempt to hold on to the fall a bit longer staying out of the snow. ![]() |
