Cheyenne, Kit Carson, & Kiowa County Highpoints 12/13/03

"Bledsoe Ranch Road" 5,255' (Cheyenne County Highpoint)

Ryan Schilling had obtained permission from the Bledsoes to visit this weekend, though was under the weather by Friday night. The drive out went quickly, and soon I met the very polite son at the Bledsoe Ranch. He directed me where to park and told me to have fun. The cattle gaurd came up quickly, and I paced over to the highest ground to take in a view of Pikes Peak off in the distance.

"Bledsoe Windmill" 5,290' (Kit Carson County Highpoint)

On the west side of the fence I plotted along toward the windmill near Kit Carson county's highpoint. There was a slight breeze that cooled the hike off somewhat - not quite like the previous weekend's adventure on Squaretop Mtn. The rise was visible from Cheyenne county's highpoint, and this was as straightforward as it gets. On the rise, there were three area within 50' that all appeared about as high, so I visited tham all. The southern end seemed highest after backsighting.

"Selenite Bluff" 4,690' (Kiowa County Highpoint)

On to highway 287, the day's last objective was within reach, arriving at the turn in the road at 2:15 p.m. as an Antelope herd rushed its way along the fenceline off toward the horizon. The terrain here was a little more interesting than the average you'd expect to find on the plains. At this point, I had developed more of an understanding of the GPS system I had brought along and had been playing with all day. The gated fenceline to the south marked the turn west, and I found a register placed by two prominent figures in the local climbing community. I made sure to visit the artificial rise above the buried fence before heading back North, which was probably as high as the cairned spot .2 miles west.
