Bald Mountain, Genesee Mountain, and Mount Lininger 10/30/04

Bald Mountain 7,988'

An early morning chill was in the air, so a short trip to conquer a good bit of the tame Evergreen Quadrangle made sense. This was a half-mile each way with 200-300' of gain perhaps. The turnoff to the north off of I-70 at the Genesee exit and then west at the next intersection was very straight-forward.

At the other side of I-70 on the same exit, I wound around Genesee Mountain guiltily passing runners on the pavement in my truck. The final 20' required walking, but the top was crowded - very different from Bald Mountain.

Mount Lininger 7,743'

This one gave me some trouble, as I kept trying to access it from the West, when in fact, the easiest access is from the East up - you guessed it - Lininger Mountain Rd. When I finally arrived, my GPS said the highpoint was some distance to the Northwest of what appeared to be the highest ground - a lump in the front yard at the top of the road. There was a lot of activity, and I felt a little nervous hiking in someone's back yard. I went around the west side and tried to find the GPS highpoint. This did not exist, and I found that the point I visited before was the existing highpoint. The front yard features a higher pile of dirt, but this is surely not the natural highpoint.
