Torreys Peak Accidents



July 16, 1950

Bill Bueler and James Kumkle started a glissade from the saddle 500 feet below the summit and lost control. Bueler fell from a standing glissade, impacting his haed on rock and losing consciousness. Kumkle sustained a bruised leg and cut knee.

July 29, 2000

Mark Chase had fallen on a snow slope near Dead Dog Couloir and injured his hip and legs. He was airlifted out after using his cellular phone to call 911.

A climber slid down Dead Dog Couloir and was rescued later by helicopter.

August 18, 2001

Margaret Ralls was hit in the head by a falling rock on the descent of Kelso Ridge while she kept sliding down scree. She was rescued after a night on the peak.

A climber was hit with rockfall while ascending Dead Dog Couloir, and was rescued.

August 1, 2004

Matt Mills submitted the following: "I was climbing a tower on Kelso Ridge at about 13,200', when I lost my balance and fell about 50 feet down a slope. Suffered a broken right hand, bruised left foot, sprained left ankle and numerous abrasions. Continued to the summit, as the fastest and safest way down at that point was to continue going up. Descended the Grays Peak Trail."

April 30, 2005

A climber fell during a CMC hike of Kelso Ridge. The climber suffered an injured shoulder during the fall and assisted by Alpine Rescue.

May 13, 2006

Brian Smith was climbing Kelso Ridge corssing a cornice when it broke. He received several broken bones as he tumbled 1000' down Dead Dog Couloir. He was airlifted and later released from the hospital.
