Quandary Peak Accidents



July 4, 1961

Charles and Marilee Hardin, his daughter, had summitted during an approaching electrical storm. Their bodies were found the next day with evidence they had both been killed by lightning.

May 29, 1977

William Trull was climbing the North Face when a large rock came loose being used as a hold, falling to a snowfield, sending him sliding 150 feet into talus. He sustained cuts, an injured knee, and a concussion.

September 6, 1998

A woman named Sunny and her partner were climbing up the West Ridge when she lost her stability on loose rock and fell 300 feet down a couloir. She was rescued, but died from her injuries the following morning in the hospital.

December 21, 1999

Michael Aaron Barrett was swept away in an avalanche while he was attempting a South Face route on Quandary peak solo. He was swept an estimated 1,600 feet from the 13,000' level and was killed from massive trauma. His body was recovered several days later. His family placed the memorial now standing the following summer.

Julie Marshall fell 300 feet down a scree slope to her death near the summit.

November 16, 2002

Matt Wisniwski and Mason Kass were attempting a route up a South-facing couloir when the snow cracked and sent them tumbling down the couloir. Kass was able to self-arrest, suffering cuts and a broken knee when he fell while descending to seek help. Wisniwski was spotted by Kass at the base of the peak, having fallen 1,800 vertical feet. He was rescued, suffering a ruptured spleen, a dislocated shoulder, and broken vertebrae, broken ribs, and broken bones of the face.

June 6, 2004

A climber was being belayed up a chimney on the North Ridge when a handhold came loose and he impacted rocks 40 feet below. He suffered a broken leg and was rescued after a difficult effort.

March 24, 2005

Jeff Uppedahl was ascending the Monte Cristo Couloir with his partner leading far ahead when an avalanche from above buried him 7' deep. His body was retrieved four hours later.

May 29, 2005

Martin Eizenberg was descending the south side 500' below the summit, traversing a rib between gullies when he slipped and fell 50', injuring his shoulder and possibly breaking his leg. He was lowered 1,000' in a litter by the rescue team and carreid out.

Larry Schlichting died of cardiac arrest while ascending the East Slopes.

Jerry Kech was leading a pitch on Inwood Arete when a handhold failed, causing a fall and protection to pull out. He suffered broken legs from the 25-foot fall.

Larry Gang was descending the South Face in moonlight after climbing the West Ridge when he lost his footing and fell 30 feet, suffering a concussion, a ruptured ACL and several sprains, cuts, and bruises. He was able to hike out under his own power. Here is his description.
