Pikes Peak Accidents



July 24, 1948

James Slack fell 15 to 20 feet from a slab near the summit, causing a fractured skull which contributed to his death.

August 12, 1957

Inestine B. Roberts, 87 years old, was on her 14th climb of Pikes Peak when an altercation at the summit house about her staying there overnight occured. She decided to descend hiking and camped out for the night. She was later discovered to have fallen down a steep slope and most likely died of exposure.

June 19, 1983

Oliver King slipped on a snowfield and tumbled 300 feet down, unable to self-arrest because he did not have an ice axe. He sustained cuts, bruises, and an injured leg. He was able to walk out on his own.

May 2, 1995

Three climbers were caught in a massive avalanche, carrying the climber on top 500 feet down and 50 feet down over an outcrop, and another fell 1500 feet. None of the climbers were buried, though the climber who fell the furthest died from his injuries five hours after the slide occured. The top climber was able to hike out to get help.

July 9, 1995

September 4, 1995

A mountain biker was resting near the 16 Golden Stairs when he lost his balance and fell 100 feet and slid a further distance. He suffered head injuries, broken bones, and several bruises. He was later rescued.

March 8, 1997

Dan Fenaughty, a news anchor, was on the North side of Pikes Peak, digging a trench to evaluate the snow stablility when the wind blew his pack a short distance. He reached around for it and fell 1,000 feet down the Little Italy chute. He remained in critical condition from head injuries for a month before his recovery.

March 22, 1997

Steve Shapiro was snowboarding when he lost control and fell down Little Italy, sustaining injuries to his chest and abdomen that preceded his death.

Another snowboarder fell to his death when he went down Little Italy by accident.

The body of a 70 year old male was found near the summit, dead from unknown causes.

July 25, 2000

Frazee G. Waltman was struck and killed by lightning after driving to the summit and descending about 100 feet. The Denver Post printed a story about this accident in conjunction with a story about the Challenger Point lightning death of 2003, leading some to believe it happened in 2003.

August 21, 2005

59-year-old Gary Williams died of a heart attack while ascending durin the Pikes Peak Marathon.
