Notchtop Mountain Accidents



February 5, 1983

Bo Mitchell and Mark Fervert were descending Notchtop after a successful ascent of the Spiral route when rockfall hit them from above. Frevert was killed by the impact of a rock to the head and Mitchell, able to walk, attempted to reach safety but died of hypothermia during the night.

August 5, 1983

Chuck Layton was descending the Spiral route on Notchtop on rappel when the anchor failed and he impacted a ledge below. Layton suffered a broken thumb and cuts.

July 1, 1984

Lee Jamieson fell unroped 300 feet to his death from the descent gully after summiting from the Spiral route when a hold came loose.

June 6, 1990

Ulrich Moderl fell 50 feet while ascending the South Ridge breaking his ankle and injuring his back. He was carried out on his partner's back.
