Mount Meeker Accidents



August 4, 1980

An unknown climber was evacuated after a fall which caused serious injury, cumulating in the victim being found at 1,800 feet of vertical scree climb.

July 29, 1985

Chris Collum was climbing the Flying Buttress with friends, when he fell 30 feet on a 5.7 traverse, only injuring his hip owed to his belayer. He was able to walk out without assistance.

1987

Courtney Bazzano was hit with falling rock while ascending The Loft and suffered head, neck and back injuries.

July 29, 1992

Gary Boyer was attempting a 5.7 rockface on Meeker unroped and fell 1,000 feet to his death. On a sidebar, he had climbed 1 - 2 times a year for four years.

June 14, 1996

Nate Dick fell 800 feet down a snowfield and was unable to self-arrest, in the process severing his carotid artery with his ice axe. He was able to be rescued via a cell-phone call he made when he came to rest.

August 14, 1997

Scot Eden encountered bad weather and attempted to descend from the Dream Weaver Route. He slipped on snow on the Left Gully and failed to self-arrest, impacting rocks and tumbling 100 feet after the initial 200 foot slide. He suffered injuries to his tibia and face. He was rescued.

August 24, 2003

Joan Avins was ascending The Loft when she was hit on the side by a piece of talus knocked loose by a climber above her. She was found by rescue personnel and carried up to the Meeker/Longs saddle where she was lifted out via helicopter.

September 6, 2004

Matt Zimcke was near the summit climbing from The Loft with friends when a rock dislodged above a handhold that pulled loose, impacting his foot and lacerating his thigh. He was carried down the opposite slope by his party and once in the tress walked out to the Wild Basin Parking lot under his own power using a trekking pole to distribute weight off the injured leg.

Clayton Smith was descending The Loft after reaching the summit when he fell 800 feet to his death.
