Huron Peak Accidents



July 9, 1994

Sandy Sigman, flight nurse, and Gary McCall, pilot, were ironically killed in a helicopter crash near the 12,000 foot level while attempting to rescue a woman who had injured her ankle. This was the first Flight For Life rescue team accident in its 22 years of existence. The injured hiker hiked out under her own power.

June 21, 2003

A female hiker had to be rescued off the NW slope late at night by a flight for life helicopter. She had slipped on a rock and had a compound fracture of her leg.

April 09, 2004

Jigmet Dawa was traversing a slope northwest of Huron Peak (nearer to Point 13,044') in the late afternoon on snowshoes with two others. Two were able to run out of the gully into the trees but Dawa was swept below where he was buried three feet deep near a tree. He was found dead near sunset by a rescue dog.

August 20, 2006

Melanie Vicknair summited Huron Peak and descended in the wrong direction. Her trip partner who was hiking in a separate area notified Search and Rescue. She rehiked Huron at night and returned down the trail the following morning, where she was met by Search and Rescue.
