Gilpin County Accidents



February 9, 1957

Paul Murphy was descending a cliff near Rollinsville and had his party below secure the rope on a ledge outcrop. When he fell, the rope tore, and he fell to his death on the ledge from head injuries.

June 10, 1972

Joseph Willoughby and Garris Flebbe were trying to rappel quickly from the West Face of Mt. Thorodin because of an oncoming storm. Willoughby was struck and killed by lightning, and the current traveled through the rope to Flebbe, who was not seriously injured.
