Justin Lee Stewart fell 60 feet over a cliff face while hiking to Hanging Lake. He did not survive the fall. According to an email from his father Brian, he was not experienced with loose rock typical of the area, having hiked only on the east coast before, but was prone to taking risks: "Other hikers had reportedly witnessed him passing a barrier that apparently indicated loose ledge that ultimately gave away".
