Mount Evans Accidents



June 23, 1957

C. Walsmith was leading a pitch on the North Face and slipped. His fall was checked by his belayer and suffered cuts, bruises, and a twisted ankle.

Summer 1976

Brian Driscoll and Jeff Feet were climbing below the summit house and fell, sliding 600 feet dwon the North Face. Upon arrival of Alpine Rescue Team, they were dead.

Two other fatalities and another accident occured on the North Face involving climbers who descended from the summit house.

July 8, 2000

John Alberter was hit by lightning while climbing Mount Evans from Mount Bierstadt, surviving.

Mark Lawley was reported missing when he did not return from his attempt. His body was later found with indications that he fell.

July 16, 2004

Kristie Johnson separated from her brother on the descent and she sought shelter when it began to rain. She became off-route on her descent to Summit Lake, and sought shelter again. She found other hikers the next morning who helped her find her way down.

September 19, 2004

An unknown male was of-route hiking near the Bear Tracks Trail and was found by rescuers the following day. He made a cell phone call home that he was lost Sunday night.

October 10, 2004

Two males set out to reach the summit from Guanella Pass and ended up calling 911 due to fatigue in the late afternoon. They were rescued and escorted out that evening.

June 12, 2005

Cory Justice and Dan Welle hiked up from Summit Lake to attempt the Sawtooth traverse when poor weather forced their retreat. The two took shelter in the summit restroom facility and were found returning down the Mount Evans Road the following morning by a CDOT truck.

An unknown female jogged ahead of her group upon ascending and became lost near Metz Creek before rescuers found her 9 hours later.

Robert Chandler parked at the top of Mount Evans Road and planned to traverse to Bierstadt but claimed to have left the trail after seeing a mountain lion. He was spotted two days later near Tahana Mountain south of Epaulet by a helicopter.
