El Paso County Accidents



June 7, 1958

Harry Rosenburg was climbing some cliffs in Devil's Canyon when he lost pinch grips and opted for a voluntary fall. The first two pitons pulled out, and his fall was stopped by a bolt placed near the base of the route. He suffered a gash on his head and ankle injuries. He was rescued and taken to a hospital.

May 24, 1958

A CMC outing to climb Specimen rock was underway when Philip Thompson fell several feet down a face, deeply cutting his legs. He abandoned the climb without reporting to the CMC leader.

November 28, 1959

Roger Ross and Lawrence Beckner were climbing a cliff in North Cheyenne Canyon when they both fell. Ross fell 80 feet down the rock face and hurtled down to the base of the canyon, not surviving the fall. Beckner fell 20 feet, suffering a broken ankle.

August 30, 1986

Richard Andrews was leading a pitch on Tenny Crags when his protection pulled out, sending him all the way to the ground. He suffered a broken ankle and injured his spine.

June 2, 1997

David Garay, an Air Force cadet, was hiking near Eagle Peak above the Campus when he fell 10 feet down a rockface. He suffered severe haed injuries and was rescued.

An unknown 22 year old male fell 60 feet to his death while climbing at Garden of the Gods. He did not have any climbing equipment.

An unknown male was scrambling on some rocks on the Stage Road near Pentrose when he fell, breking his leg and receiving multiple cuts.

November 8, 1997

Chris James was climbing South Gateway Rock at Garden of the Gods hwne he fell 150'. He suffered a broken leg and cuts.

April 24, 1998

An unknown male Air Force cadet was climbing a route near the base called Eagle's Nest when he fell 200' to his death on a snowy slope below the cliffs.

An unknown male was sleeping with his grilfriend near a cliff and was later found to have rolled over and fallen 200' to his death.

April 28, 2004

Nicholas Parisi was ascending the Pinnacle in Cheyenne Canyon when he lost his handhold and fell 400 feet to his death.

A 17 year-old photographer fell in Garden of the Gods attempting to take pictures of the sunset. He was paralyzed after the fall.

Mark Heinmets was climbing in Garden of the Gods when wet sandstone crumbled and he fell head-first over 30 feet to his death.

January 24, 2005

Efron Roque de la Cruz was hiking with his brother and friends in Cheyenne Canyon when he slipped and fell about 100'. Efron died before rescue arrived.

Ocotober 17, 2005

John Agnos was ascending North Gateway Rock in Garden of the Gods unroped when he fell about 60 feet. He was planning to BASE jump off the rock. In less than two weeks later, he ended up tangled in high wires after jumping from the KOVR 2,000-foot transmitter tower in California, requiring a 5-hour rescue effort.
