Blanca Peak Accidents



June 18, 1960

H. Hoyt and S. Landeen were climbing the North Face when a large rockfall occured, sending both climbers free-falling to their deaths 700 feet onto a snowfield, where they slid another 400 feet down.

May 28, 1972

Larry Campbell was descending a snow slope on the North side of the East Ridge after a technical ascent of the North Face when he slipped and fell 150 feet. He attempted to climb a rock rib, but became stranded and was evacuated by helicopter later. He sustained a broken knee cap and a fractured pelvis.

August 1, 1988

A climber named Gerry was descending down the center of the Northwest Face when he slipped and was unable to self arrest when he lost his ice axe, impacting a rock rib. He fractured his pelvis and was rescued in a helicopter the following day.

July 19, 2005

Dikran Koroghlian of Santa Fe had soloed the Ormes Buttress on the East Face late in the afternoon and had not planned out his descent. He ultimately opted to descend the Buttress which he ascended, and without protection fell an estimated 600 feet to his death.
