Andrews Glacier Accidents



June 1968

An Unknown male climber was descending below Andrews Tarn when he slipped and slid head first. He impacted rocks and was unconcsious for a brief period before Rangers helped carry him out.

July 27, 1985

Roy Curret was attempting to glissade a snowfield below Andrews Tarn when he lost control and was unable to self-arrest, losing his ice axe. His leg caught on some rocks at the base of the 150 foot slide, turning him and impacting his side. He sustained multiple fracutes and tendon damage to his left foot.

June 14, 1990

An unknown female lost control while participating in a glissading class, fracturing her fibula. She was carried out by a member of the class who had EMT experience.

September 16, 1995

Charles Bailey lost control while glissading, losing his ice axe in the process. Unable to self-arrest, Bailey impacted rocks at the base of the glacier, suffering severe head injury and was flown out via helicopter.

August 2, 2004

Richard Mercado was glissading down the glacier on a plastic trash bag when he lost control and impacted rocks, sustaining head injuries. He was flown out via helicopter. .
